Kathy Shimpock is a storyteller and a teacher of the storytelling tradition. She writes, "My mother told me fairy tales. Some of them frightened me to my very core, but I think they held me in good stead. I've always been on the alert for the magic, the danger and the adventure of life. and as I've gotten older and told these tales to the next generation, I find that little jumps out and startles me anymore. I expect the unexpected. "Frau Holle" is one of my favorite stories. She is both kind and ferocious at the same time. It is only if you look beyond her outward appearance, that you can see her true nature. She watches and dispenses justice fairly. the young girl who is giving and hardworking is richly rewarded; while her step-sister, who is lazy, entitled and vain is punished. In this way, Frau Holle reminds me of the Santa Claus who dispenses presents or switches depending upon your behavior. In fact, I often think of her as a "sister" to Santa."
